Do-It-Yourself Publishing

The advent of e-books and print on demand (POD) publishing has made self publishing and do-it-yourself publishing an appealing option to many authors. This means that now one can produce books with lower up-front costs, using the power of internet distribution for low-key books.

Many small press and ‘self-publishing’ companies offer viable options and contracts to authors, and cost effective POD production to release book titles. As part of the deal authors may need to sign acquisition agreements, and manage copyrights and other technical formalities. In many cases it is the author who picks up the cost of production and release, and sometimes the marketing is taken up by the small press in return for some royalty as compensation.

When looking to self publish, one must carefully study the available options and the terms of contracts to establish clearly the ownership and rights of the published title. Authors need to move beyond the conventional models of publishing and consider all alternatives.

A well researched approach to publishing means a better arrangement with a reputable publisher, and a well planned business management and marketing. Starting one’s own publishing company is a viable option in today’s scenario. Rapid advancement in printing has revolutionized the world of publishing, making it easier for authors to bypass a closed system. Self-publishing companies and small presses provide unconventional services and allow writers to take their work to their audience without a traditional ‘big’ publishing house’s assistance. The arena of self publishing is open to explore, and exploit, if one is armed with the right kind of information.
